1: Vision
Our vision is that our research should further humanity’s understanding of itself and of its place in the world, creating room for empathy, critical thinking and interdisciplinary engagement with social and global challenges. This research extends across languages and linguistics, literatures, and the creative practices of music, film, and visual culture; it engages with the study of cultures and societies and their cultural productions across different media, time spans and areas.
To this end, we strive to provide a supportive, inclusive and stimulating environment and culture, which allows all members of our community to fulfil their potential, achieve their research ambitions, and pursue their intellectual curiosity. Colleagues are supported in preparing high quality publications and creative work; in seeking and obtaining grant income suited to their research and career stage (from international networks to individual fellowships); in delivering research-led teaching and a supportive environment for postgraduate researchers (PGRs); in embedding the delivery of impact and public engagement, and pathways towards them, in their research; in forging and maintaining good relations with subject associations, learned societies, and the wider academic community; and in contributing to the delivery of the University’s Aberdeen 2040 pillars (inclusivity, sustainability, interdisciplinarity, and an international approach), and the 2040 challenges.
2: Goals
2.1. Maintain a vibrant research culture, based on effective communication, collaboration and support, enabling all research-active colleagues to realise their potential in their research;
2.2. Provide colleagues with as much as time as possible to engage in all aspects of research, and to develop their own paths;
2.3. Provide colleagues with relevant, supportive and stimulating environments within the wider research community, in the form of research centres and peer support groups;
2.4. Provide colleagues with constructive feedback on evolving research;
2.5. Encourage and support applications for external research funding;
2.6. Provide training and support to assist in research, including training in research ethics and integrity, training in identifying and developing impact opportunities, and support in delivery of impact;
2.7. Maintain and develop a vibrant PGR student and post-doctoral researcher community, offering opportunities for training and relevant academic experience;
2.8. Raise the profile of the School and its members within the University, nationally and internationally.
3: To ensure delivery of our Goals we have established a series of means:
3.1. Make time available.
3.2. Support research activity.
3.3. Foster a supportive research culture and community.
3.4. Minister effectively to research in the School.
